Talk, Learn, Do

A MoneySense workshop for parents

Do you know how to talk to your children about money?

Money management is an essential skill best developed from a young age, and there is nowhere better to start than in the home. This workshop will cover teaching children about money through everyday experiences, pocket money and how to deal with challenges such as pestering.

If you’re a parent or carer of a child aged 3-11 years of age, we welcome you to join us for an interactive workshop, hosted on Zoom. For more information please take a look at the video below, self-filmed in the living room of our Financial Capability Lead at NatWest Group, Caroline Edwards.

You can sign up for either of the below dates:

Tuesday 23rd March (12-2.15pm)

Thursday 25th March (5-7.15pm)

Once registration is complete you will be sent a confirmation email with further details on how to join the event on the date you have selected. We will be using Zoom for these events which enables you to join via your PC, laptop, tablet or mobile device, however joining by computer and using Chrome is recommended.

What is a Talk, Learn, Do workshop?

Our workshop, called Talk, Learn, Do, provides parents of children aged 3-11 years with strategies, tips and more confidence to talk to their children about money.

Talk, Learn, Do was created by the Money and Pensions Service and will be delivered through NatWest Group’s free financial education programme, MoneySense. Over 2016 and 2017, an in-person version of the workshop was successfully piloted in Wales and 99% of attendees involved in the evaluation would recommend it to other parents.  It has been adapted for online delivery by NatWest Group.

The workshop is split into 6 core sections, which are brought to life through activities and discussion, covering why we need to actively teach our children about money, how to teach children through everyday activities and options for how best to put this into practice.

What can participants expect from the workshop?

The workshop is 2 hours long, with a 10 minute break, and will be facilitated by a NatWest Group employee on Zoom. The agenda for the workshop can be found here.

All participants that have registered for a particular date will be welcomed into the main Zoom room. Following a short introduction, parents will be split into breakout rooms with their workshop facilitator for the duration of the 2 hours. There will only be a small group of parents in each of the breakout rooms so that everyone has an opportunity to join in.

This workshop is a pilot because it is being delivered for the first time by NatWest Group and we are using Zoom, rather than a face to face delivery method, due to the Covid-19 pandemic.  The evaluation is being managed by our partner IFF-Research.  There will be some questions beforehand and after the workshop to evaluate your experience, there will also be the option to participate in a follow up interview.  Taking part in each of these stages is invaluable as it will help us determine the success of the pilot and therefore develop evidenced ways to support families like yours in the future.

What will you need for the workshop?

You will need access to the internet and Zoom - your link will be provided in your confirmation email once you have registered.

Talk, Learn, Do is for adults but we know that these are unusual times. We would like to emphasise that children are welcome to play in the background or sit on your lap throughout!

    The workshop is free.
